Iran's top nuclear negotiator and Security Council chief, Hasan Rohani, is expected to open a two-day visit to Moscow today,17th February, for talks with Russian officials. Rohani is expected to meet with Igor Ivanov, the head of the Russian Security Council.
The Russian Security Council, in announcing the talks, gave few details, saying only that Rohani and Ivanov planned to discuss Russian-Iranian relations and problems of international security.
Russia is nearing completion of construction of a reactor for Iran's first nuclear power plant at Bushehr. The two sides are expected later this month to sign a deal in which Iran would return spent nuclear fuel from the plant to Russia to prevent the material from possibly being reprocessed for use in atomic weapons.
The Russian-Iranian talks also come amid U.S. pressure on Iran over its nuclear program and European Union efforts to persuade Tehran to permanently abandon uranium enrichment.
