Iran's top nuclear negotiator warned the United States and Europe against referring Iran to the UN Security Council over its nuclear program. Speaking at an international conference on nuclear technology in Tehran on 5th March, Hassan Rohani said Iran would resume uranium enrichment if its program is brought under Security Council scrutiny. He said:
"If our case is referred to the Security Council we will not ratify the Additional Protocol [to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty] and we will start uranium enrichment."
Rohani added that Iran would halt negotiations if European negotiators insist Tehran turns its temporary suspension of enrichment-related activities into a permanent halt.
Britain, France and Germany are trying to secure an Iranian commitment to scrap enrichment plans. Washington accuses Tehran of covertly trying to build a nuclear bomb, which Iran denies.
