Iranian human rights activist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Shirin Ebadi marked International Women's day today, 8th March, by urging western countries to give greater support to pro-democracy movements in the Middle East. In a speech in the French town of Brest, Ebadi said the propagation of democracy and human rights are in Europe's long-term interests.
She said Islam is compatible with democracy and is not a religion of terror and violence.
Ebadi is due to address members of the French parliament in a speech on Wednesday, before she travels to Strasbourg to speak to the foreign affairs commission of the European Parliament.
