Iranian President Mohammad Khatami calls the election of Iraq's new president a step towards full sovereignty and an end to occupation by U.S.-led forces. The official IRNA news agency quoted Khatami as saying today that, by electing Talabani as president, "Iraq has taken another step towards freedom."
Khatami said Iran supports the Iraqi government and nation and is willing to help them rebuild their country.
