Iran's Interior Ministry today announced a ban on Afghans residing in the country's eastern border provinces. Ahmad Hosseini, head of the Interior Ministry's refugee office, said the order was due to security reasons. He did not go into details but said the ban included the border provinces of Khorasan, Sistan and Baluchistan. He said Afghans living in those areas would have to return to Afghanistan as soon as possible.
There are about a million Afghan refugees living in Iran. Tehran says it expects half of them to leave the country before the end of this year. Over the past three years, more than 1.3 million Afghan refugees have left Iran for home, through a United Nations repatriation program.
