Iran Interior Ministry Warns of Vote Fraud

Iranian Interior Ministry spokesman Jahanbakhsh Khanjani said today that increasing fraud threatens presidential run-off elections scheduled for Friday. His statement followed action by the country's Islamist Guardians Council dismissing widespread complaints of fraud in last week's first round. Tehran Mayor Mahmood Ahmadinejad opposes moderate cleric Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani in the runoff. An Ahmadinejad win would give anti-Western religious hardliners control of every state institution. The reformist-controlled Interior Ministry, which organizes the election, said in the days before the first round of election, unnamed "institutions whose job is to protect people, organized and orchestrated" the vote."
