Teachers' groups began joint sessions with education ministry officials and lawmakers in order to discuss the details of a plan to promote their employment grade. The first session on teachers’ grade promotion plan was held today by the district 9 teachers’ organization to generate more awareness about the plan.
Tehrani teacher and activist Ahmad Behrang says the plan to promote qualified teachers one employment grade will cost the education ministry 4.5 trillion rials, but in the next fiscal year only 500 billion rials has been allocated to the plan. In addition to this plan, the teachers demand pay equal to other civil servants, Behrang says.
Teachers staged several street protests, sit-ins and strikes throughout last year, demanding higher pay and better working conditions. The educaton ministry's plan to promote qualified teachers by one grade was announced last month, but teachers' groups criticized the measure, because it limits promotions to only one grade level, and the promoted teachers will not become eligibile for another promotion for at least five years.
