TRAFICKING: Iran Proposes Anti-Smuggling Security Belt around Afghanistan


Head of drug enforcement headquarters Ali Hashemi proposed setting up a security belt around Afghanistan to contain the flow of opium and heroin. The measure cannot succeed, and did not succeed in 2001 when Afghanistan’s neighbors attempted it, RFE/RL’s Iran expert Abbas Sami tells Radio Farda’s broadcaster Golnaz Esfandiari. One reason for the failure of the program at the time was the Taliban’s lack of good relations with Afghanistan’s neighbors.
