UPRISING ANNIVERSARY: Human Rights Defenders Calls for Prosecution of Perpetrators of 1999 Dorm Attack

A group of human rights lawyer founded by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Shirin Ebadi called for identification and prosecution of the perpetrators of the July 8, 1999 police and plainclothes security forces’ attack on Tehran University student dorms, in which at least one student was killed and scores of students were hospitalized with wounds and broken bones. The Human Rights Defenders’ Center (Kanoon Moda’fe’an Hoquq-e Bashar) said on Monday in a statement timed with the anniversary of the July 9 student uprising that instead of trying the culprits, the judiciary blamed the students and put them on trial.
