The conservative Tehran city council passed a resolution banning the holding of any international trade exhibition in the city’s permanent exhibition and convention grounds, defying the commerce ministry, which for the past three months has resisted the city council’s efforts to evict the convention and exhibition center the facilities it has held for more than 40 years. The commerce ministry said hundreds of contracts have been signed with foreign concerns for future trade exhibits on the site. The passage of the ban brought the brewing conflict between the Tehran city council and Khatami’s government to a boil. Cabinet spokesman Abdollah Ramezanzadeh accused the city council of ignoring important political and economic national interests.
