ENVIRONMENT: Contamination of Rivers Threaten Food Supply

July 9, 2004 - Environmental protection organization’s advisor Mohammad-Reza Fatemi said rivers across the country are polluted with a variety of chemical and organic substances, and eating fish from these rivers could cause health problems. Ecologist Esmail Kahrom tells Radio Farda that pollutants travel from rivers in central Iran to the waters of the Persian Gulf, which has 47 times more pollution than open waters. Consuming fish contaminated with heavy metals and chemicals can in long term cause brain damage, he adds.
