LABOR: No Charges Filed against Teachers’ Union Leaders 48 Hours after Arrests

July 12, 2004 - Forty-Eight hours after their arrests, no charges have been filed against Mahmud Beheshti Langroudi, secretary-general of the teacher’s trade union, and Ali Asghar Zati, the union’s spokesman. Their arrests were confirmed by the head of public relations office of the Tehran judiciary, who said their arrests were unrelated to their activities in the teachers’ trade union. Ali Poursoleyman, a member of the central council of the teachers’ trade union, tells Radio Farda's broadcaster Farin Asemi that the judiciary probably wants to imply that the two are collaborators of the exiled opposition. We believe, he says, that the teachers' problems cannot be resolved by the actons of security forces and the judiciary.
