July 13, 2004 - The traffic officers who are gradually replacing the recently deployed beret-wearing anti-riot police in Tehran streets have been allowed to carry batons since last Saturday, according to state media..
Student activists have charged that the riot police were deployed to crackdown on banned student rallies on the fifth anniversary of the 1999 uprising, but police chief Mohammad-Baqer Qalibaf said the deployment of riot police was a new measure to control Tehran’s chaotic traffic, and particularly the motorcycle riders zigzagging through the cars. However, motorcyclists complained that riot police officers mistreated them. They said riot police had orders to stop motocyclist in any way possible, and they often kicked riders off their moving bikes, Tehran-based reporter Arash Qavidel says on Radio Farda.
