HUMAN RIGHTS: Canadian Press Activists Call for Transfer of Slain Journalist’s Body to Canada

July 15, 2004 - In a letter to the Iranian ambassador in Canada, the Canadian Journalists for Free Expression condemned the Iranian judiciary’s refusal to allow Canadian observers in Zahra Kazemi’s death in custody trial. It called for the transfer of slain Canadian-Iranian photojournalist’s body to Canada. Kazemi died a year ago of head injuries she received during interrogation at the Evin prison, where she had been taken for photographing prisoners’ families gathered outside. Head of PEN Canada’s Writers in Prison Committee tells Radio Farda’s Toronto correspondent Maryam Aghvami that he is pleased to see Canada considers economic sanctions and other measures against the Islamic government.
