HUMAN RIGHTS: Rafsanjan Court Convicts Student Writer
July 19, 2004 – A press Court in Rafsanjan handed out a two-year suspended jail term and a six-month ban from leaving the country to Mohammad-Reza Nasab-Abdollahi, a member of the Rafsanjan University’s Islamic student council. Nasa-Abdollahi tells Radio Farda’s broadcaster Farin Asemi that he was convicted for having written an article demanding the release of student activist leader Ali Afshari. He said earlier a committee in charge of student publications in Rafsanjan ruled to suspend the student newsletter Noqteh-Sarkhat for six months, but a higher committee in the ministry of higher education in Tehran overturned the ruling. The Basij unit of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps complained to the judiciary, but the public court refused to hear the case, and passed it to the provincial press court, he adds. The trial lasted five minutes, he says.
