HUMAN RIGHTS: 12 Political Prisoners Go On Hunger Strike

July 19, 2004- Twelve political prisoners, lead by lawyer Nasser Zarafshan and students Ahmad Batebi and Peyman Piran have been on hunger strike since July 5, spokesman of the “Student Committee to Defend Striking Political Prisoners” Peyman Aref tells Radio Farda’s broadcaster Farin Asemi. Their strike began on the day security officials raided the home of student activist Peyman Piran and arrested his father Mostafa Piran, who is active in the teachers’ labor movement, he adds. The hunger strike has three specific goals: punishment of the perpetrators of the July 1999 police attack on student dorms, release of all political prisoners and an end to the prosecution of the Piran family. On the 15th day of their strike, the physical condition of the strikers, particularly that of Zarafshan has become critical, he says.
