REGION: MKO Claims US Gave It “Protected” Status

July 26, 2004 - The Iraq-based anti-regime group Mojahedin-e Khalq Orgnaization (MKO) announced on Sunday during a Paris press conference that it has been informed by commanders of the US-led coalition forces in Iraq that it has been accorded protection as “non-combatants” under the Geneva convention. The announcement was not immediately confirmed by the coalition forces in Iraq, but cabinet spokesman Abdollah Ramezanzadeh said on Monday in Tehran: “We hope the ones who accuse others of supporting terrorism act honestly themselves.” The MKO, whose nearly 3,000 members are living in the Camp Ashraf near Iran border, has been listed an international terrorist organization by the US and the EU.
