EMERGENCY: 40 Stores Burn in Tehran Bazaar Fire


An electrical blackout was announced to have been the cause of a fire on Tuesday in Tehran bazaar that witnesses said destroyed at least 40 shops, but no one was hurt. July 27, 2004 - “Early this morning around 5 AM a Tehran municipal sanitation worker saw a fire in the Mansour passage of the Tehran bazaar’s Kuwaiti section,” Tehran-based reporter Fariborz Kiani tells Radio Farda’s broadcaster Keyvan Hosseini. Local sources say the fire was due the electrical blackout last night,” he adds. “By 4 PM a team of 50 firemen from four fire stations had complete their operations, but no figures were given about damages. Officers said no one was hurt in the fire, which destroyed an estimated 40 stories,” he adds. The fire did not damage nearby buildings and three firemen who had superficial bruises were treated quickly, he adds. “By quickly responding, the fire department managed to prevent the fire from spreading.”
