PRESS: Journalists Hold Second Rally to Protest Closing of Newspapers

August 2, 2004 - In their second rally within so many weeks, nearly 200 journalists held a rally inside the offices of the trade society of journalists, a semi-union representing the reformist press. Spokesman of the society for defense of press freedoms Mashallah Shamsolvaezin compared the judiciary’s systematic campaign against reformist press with genocide, and accused Tehran prosecutor Said Mortazavi for having provided the tools for the genocide, journalist Ali Pirhosseinlou, who was at the meeting, tells Radio Farda’s broadcaster Farin Asemi. Mortazavi closed scores of newspapers in his previous position as the press court’s judge. He is also responsible for the closing last July of Vaqaye-ye Ettefaqieh and Jomhouriyat, two new reformist publications.
