REFUGEES: Man Defends His Right to Sanctuary in Vancouver Church to Avoid Deportation to Iran

August 4, 2004 A 39-year-old man who says he would be executed if deported to Iran from Canada defended his right to sanctuary in a Vancouver church, where he has lived for the past five weeks following the failure of his asylum application in Canada. Amir Kazemian was ordered out of Canada last month after losing his final refugee appeal. But instead of returning to his homeland, he sought refuge at St. Michael’s Anglican Church. Federal Immigration Minister Judy Sgro said on Sunday “no one is exempt from the law,” and that churches should stop offering sanctuary to people who face deportation. “They're going to kill me. I've been tortured in my country,” he said in an interview with CBC news from Vancouver. “My father as well. We have a very political family.”
