REGION: Iraq Calls for Return of Passenger Jets from Iran

August 4, 2004 Iraqi defense minister Hazem al-Shaalan asked the Islamic government to return the passenger jets which Saddam Hussein had parked in Iran before the 1991 Persian Gulf war in order to keep them from possible US attacks. The official reaction from Iran has so far been nothing but cold shoulder, however, the Islamic Republic officials have said in the past that the 22 jets would be returned to Iraq if requested by the United Nations. In what has been described as the first verbal war between the two countries since the fall of Saddam, Iraqi defense minister last month accused the Islamic Republic of attempting to destabilize Iraq by gaining influence in Iraq’s local and national institutions.
