HUMAN RIGHTS: Lawyer Finds Canada Lacking in Commitment to Bring Slain Journalist’s Killers to Justice

August 4, 2004 The new Canadian foreign affairs minister will make statements about the Canadian-Iranian photojournalist Zahra Kazemi’s death in custody trial, but for the purpose of political and economic gains, Canada will do little for its official vow to bring the journalist’s killer(s) to justice, according to Hamid Mojtahedi, a Toronto-based member of Canadian chapter of Lawyers without Borders, who went to Iran last year to investigate judiciary’s handling of investigation into the case. He tells Radio Farda’s Toronto correspondent Maryam Aghvami that whatever Canada does, will be in response to domestic pressures and the needs and policies of the Liberal Party, not out of any particular concern for Ms. Kazemi’s case.
