NUCLEAR: US Official Calls for Isolating Not “Engaging” Iran

August 18, 2004 - In a rebuke to the European governments’ policy of “engaging” the Islamic government, US Undersecretary of State John Bolton said “This regime has to be isolated, not quote-unquote engaged.” In a speech Tuesday at the Hudson Institute, Bolton cited reports by the International Atomic Energy Agency and admissions of the Islamic government’s nuclear negotiators to their European counterparts, and added, “It is the accumulation of this public and uncontradicted evidence, not just our own sensitive intelligence information, that leads us to our conclusions about Iran's true objectives,” Bolton said. The United States and the international community will not allow Iran to build nuclear weapons, Bolton added.
