Iran officially announced that the range of its Shahab 3 missiles has reached 2000 kilometers. The deputy head of Iran’s Aerospace Organisation Naser Maleki, clarified remarks made yesterday by Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, Iran’s powerful politician who had not elaborated on the increased range of Iran’s missiles. “The testing of Shahab 3 was carried out successfully and we have achieved all our objectives”, said Maleki. “Should the range of the missile increase, we will definitely inform the people.” The Islamic Republic's growing missile range, which now stretches to parts of southeastern Europe, comes at a time of heightened international attention on Tehran's nuclear program, which Washington says is a covert bid for nuclear weapons. Iran’s new missile capabilities are bound to raise alarm in western capitals and particularly in Israel, whose leaders have been discussing the practicality of launching preemptive strikes against Iran’s nuclear installations. Iran says that is nuclear program is peaceful but has vowed to respond forcefully to any preemptive strike by Israel. Stressing that Iran’s missile program is meant to be a deterrent, Maleki added, “We do not intend to enter into psychological warfare but we will surely confront others [if they do so].” In the meantime, some other Iranian officials today made tough declarations regarding Iran's stand off in nuclear issues with the west.
