In a meeting with the foreign ministry delegation who arrived in Baghdad on Wednesday, a US coalition official informed them that their mediation was unwelcome, Coalition spokesman Dan Senor said. “In fact we believe that the issue with Sadr and his militia should be resolved by Iraqis, not Iranians,” he added. Foreign minister Kamal Kharrazi, who on Wednesday had said the US had asked Iran for help to improve security in Iraq, said on Friday that the delegation headed by foreign ministry's director of Persian Gulf affairs Hossein Sadeghi was on “a fact finding mission. “How can one mediate between occupiers and the Iraqi people,” Kharrazi said. • President Khatami condemned the killing of Baghdad embassy's first secretary Khalil Naimi and blamed the escalation of violence in Iraq on “US negligence toward the realities and the sentiments of people in the region.” Naimi was gunned down on Thursday morning in his car, as he was leaving the Baghdad embassy compound. • In a statement read by a spokesman in Baghdad, the foreign ministry delegation said its mission was part of on-going and routine official exchanges with the Iraqi government, and had not been requested by anyone, and would not mediate in the Najaf standoff. • A member of the foreign ministry delegation linked Naimi's killing to the delegation's mission, according to the AFP. • Iraq welcomes Iran's efforts to return peace to Iraq, Iraqi foreign minister Hooshyar Zebari said. With the arrival of the Iranian delegation in Najaf, the conflicts have subsided, Iraqi TV reported. It showed images of the Iranian delegation in talks with Shiite Iraqi leaders. The success of the delegation's negotiations could eliminate the danger of confrontation between the US forces and Moqtada Sadr's militias, it said. • Defense minister Ali Shamkhani denied rumors that Moqtada Sadr would be given political asylum in Iran, according to Polish defense minister, who met with him in Warsaw today. • Tehran was pleased to receive a request from the US for help in Iraq, writes Paris daily Le Monde. The killing of the Iranian diplomat in Baghdad, right after an Italian hostage was murdered by his Iraqi captors and just as Bin Laden's offer of cease fire to Europe was aired by Arab TV channels, indicate a coordinated effort to divide the coalition forces, Paris daily Liberation writes. (Mir-Ali Hosseini) • The Iranian authorities are trying to carve out a role in Iraq for themselves, using kidnapping of foreigners and conflicts among Iraqi Shiites as excuses, Italian daily La Republica writes. Instability in Iraq is not in the interest of the Islamic Republic, Corriere della Sera writes. Tehran's strategy is to deepen the crisis in Iraq in order to postpone the June 30 transfer of power, Italian weekly Panorama writes. (Ahmad Ra'fat, Rome) Higher Oil Prices Drive Iran's GNP Growth • The GNP grew by the rate of 7.5 percent in the fiscal year that ended on March 20, 2004, cabinet spokesman Abdollah Ramezanzadeh said, crediting President Khatami's economic policies for the growth, which was in fact driven by higher oil prices, and has been common in all oil producing countries. Human rights activist and founder of the anti-capital punishment organization Hands Off Cain Sergio Delia tells Radio Farda that the prosecutors' order may have been issued under pressure from the Italian government, which is hoping to use Iranian authorities' help in obtaining the release of Italian hostages in Iraq.
