Summary of Iran Stories in Today's BroadcastsBehnam NateghiMonday, May 24, 2004 Foreign Minister Warns EU and IAEA on Failure of Nuclear Cooperation • Foreign minister Kamal Kharrazi warned the European Union and the UN International Atomic Energy Agency that they would have “a lot to lose” if their cooperation with the Islamic Republic fails. “The European side has not forgotten its commitments towards Iran's nuclear case, this is a common project, that is, if Iran fails, the EU and the IAEA will suffer losses as well,” Kharrazi said, according to the state-run “students” news agency ISNA. • North Korea has emerged as a possible supplier in the clandestine nuclear network, Geneva-based diplomats said on Sunday. The communist regime was the likely source of nearly two tons of uranium imported by Libya and may have been the source of a shipment of uranium to Iran in the early 1990's, which had been routed through China. Isfahan Stock Exchange Opens • One million shares changed hands in the recently opened Isfahan stock exchange, and the government announced plans to open trading floors in Shiraz and other cities. Iran's economy does not have the capacity to sustain too many trading rooms, Paris-based economist Jamshid Asadi tells Radio Farda. The volume of trade in Iran's stock exchange is too small, when compared with that of France, which is itself a minor stock exchange compared to that of the US, he adds. Another difference between Iran's stock exchanges and those of Europe and the US is that in western countries, the companies whose stocks are traded by the public are transparent, report their profit and loss on an annual basis, and news of their operations is available to all citizens at the same time. It is in fact a crime for trades based on insider information. Iran's economy is based on privileges for a select group of connected people, which causes mistrust in the stock market, he adds. Another obstacle for expansion of Iran's stock market is lack of foreign capital and regulations that bar foreigners from entering the market, he says. (Mahmonir Rahimi) US Energy Department Bars Iranian Born Physicist from Entering His Lab at Stanford University • The US Energy Department barred Iranian-born physicist Shahram Rahatlou from entering his lab at Stanford University, the monthly Nature reports. Rahatlou, who emigrated to Italy with his family when he was 13, has worked at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) for six years, but was told in February 2003 that he was no longer allowed entry. Rahatlou won the 2004 Mitsuyoshi Tanaka Dissertation Award for an exceptional thesis in particle physics, Nature says. In e-mail correspondence with Radio Farda Rahatlou refused to discuss his case. SLAC is a civilian facility that does not conduct classified or sensitive research. (Fatemeh Aman) Revolutionary Guards' Basij Unit Demonstrates against US and Britain's Military Operations in Iraqi Shiite Cities • In a rally set up by the Basij Corps, the volunteer unit of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards, protestors hurled petrol bombs and stones at the British embassy for the third time in less than a week to denounce the presence of Western forces in Iraqi Shiite cities of Najaf and Karbala. “We want the immediate closure of the British embassy,” chanted the Basiji forces outside the embassy, a focus for anti-US protests in the absence of a US diplomatic office in Iran. The petrol bombs landed outside the embassy and a British diplomat said the demonstration was relatively peaceful, unlike the two protests earlier this week when stones thrown at the compound smashed several windows in a building inside. Riot police, who had been deployed in advance in apparent anticipation of the demonstration, used batons to disperse the crowd. In a speech at the rally, a cleric, introduced as the Majles prayer leader, said if the Supreme Leader commands us, we will storm the embassy. The demonstrators issued a statement asking the foreign ministry to summon the British ambassador and slap him in the face. Ambassador Protests Presence of Pahlavi Family at Spanish Royal Wedding • The ambassador to Madrid Morteza Alviri protested against the reported presence of members of the deposed Pahlavi royal family at the wedding ceremony of the Spanish crown prince. Jailed Veteran Journalist Has Successful Spine Surgery • In spite of a 50 percent risk of paralysis, the spine surgery performed earlier today on jailed veteran journalist Siamak Pourzand was successful, his Paris-based brother Lohrasb Pourzand tells Radio Farda. (Mir-Ali Hosseini, Paris) • In a letter to the Islamic Republic judiciary, Pourzand's Toronto-based daughter Leili Pourzand called for transfer of her father to Canada. (Maryam Aghvami) Father Poisons His Three Children • A Tehrani father, angry with his wife who had left him, poisoned himself and their three children, but the four survived after neighbors took all to the hospital. Tehran-based reporter Ali Rambod tells Radio Farda that the father would not be prosecuted, because of the Islamic rule which considers father's custody absolute. (Farin Asemi) Head of Special Court for the Clergy Assaults Representative of Newspaper Publishers • In today's meeting of the press supervision council, cleric Hojat-ol-Eslam Gholamhossein Mohseni-Ezhehee, head of the special court for the clergy, threw a sugar bowl at the representative of newspaper publishers Isa Saharkhiz and then bit his arm. There is a video of the event which I urge the Supreme Leader to see, Tehran-based lawyer Nemat Ahmadi tells Radio Farda. Ezheh-ee had assaulted Saharkhiz with a sugar bowl in another meeting as well, adds Ahmadi. (Siavash Ardalan) .
