Speaking at the school where Aghajari taught history before his arrest on charges of insulting Islam, Kadivar said nobody had asked the court to release Aghajari because he is mentally ill. The court had said in its review of a Hamedan court's death verdict that Aghajari could be released from jail only after a psychiatrist confirmed his mental illness. A court in Hamedan had sentenced Aghajari, a board member of the leftist Mojahedin of the Islamic Revolution Organization (MIRO), for his speech on Islamic Protestantism at a Hamedan mosque, during which he criticized clerical rule and the Shiite principle of religious emulation.
