The 7.1 magnitude earthquake that struck eastern Turkey on October 23, 2011, left hundreds dead and destroyed thousands of buildings. In the days following the tremor, Abbas Atilay, a photographer working for RFE/RL's Azerbaijani Service, traveled to the Turkish city of Van, which was one of the places worst affected by the quake. While he was there, he documented the frantic rescue efforts that took place in the immediate aftermath of the quake and also captured images of local residents as they began the slow process of rebuilding their lives.
