Roads Closed as Northwest Iran Hit with Snow

Hundreds of villages across northwest Iran are cut off and key roads are closed today after up to 75 centimetres of snow fell in an overnight blizzard. Parviz Rezazadeh of Iran’s Meteorological Office said the snow fall is far above the average. The worse hit areas are along the Alborz mountain range and the Zagros mountain chain. According to IRNA, the Iranian official news agency, hundreds of villages in Kurdistan province are cut off, with some areas also losing water and electricity. Schools in the region were also reported shut. Northern districts of capital Tehran were also dumped with up to 20 centimetres of snow, causing havoc with traffic. Roads linking capital with the Caspian Sea to the north are also cut, with state media warning of the additional danger of avalanches.
