U.S. President George W. Bush arrived in Germany today,23rd February, on the second leg of a fence-mending European tour. Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, who had a deep rift with Bush over the 2003 U.S.-led invasion of Iraq, met the American president on the tarmac at Frankfurt's Rhein-Main airport where Bush's jet landed earlier today. The two leaders are expected to discuss Iran's nuclear program, as well as NATO and European Union efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan during talks in the nearby city of Mainz. In advance of Bush's visit, Schroeder said on German television that the Americans and the EU have together made clear they want a negotiated solution to concerns that Iran may be seeking to develop nuclear weapons. Iran denies trying to build an atomic weapon. During his nine-hour visit, Bush is also expected to meet with U.S. forces in Germany.
