Russian President Vladimir Putin says that blocking Iran from developing a civilian nuclear program could humiliate Iran and lead to serious consequences.
Putin, in an interview with Israeli television in advance of his visit to Israel next week, said Russia is only helping Iran develop its nuclear energy program for peaceful purposes. He added: "Russia is not just helping Iran strengthen its nuclear potential. We are working exclusively on peaceful uses of atomic energy, the atomic energy industry." Israel and the United States say they suspect Iran may be secretly trying to develop nuclear weapons. Iran denies any such effort. Russia is helping Iran construct a nuclear power station at Bushehr, in south Iran.
Putin said in the interview that his government will combat anti-Semitism and xenophobia, but that he does not believe they are currently a serious threat in Russia.
Putin also said he and U.S. President George W. Bush maintain good personal relations despite differences on some issues.
Putin is due to visit Israel from next Wednesday in the first visit by a Moscow leader to the Jewish state
