Russia's foreign ministry said today that foreign minister Sergey Lavrov and U.S. Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice discussed a coming conference on Iraq as well as Iran's nuclear program, and cooperation against terrorism. A ministry statement said that Rice and Lavrov, who spoke by phone Saturday, discussed preparations for a June 22 international conference on rebuilding Iraq. The conference in Brussels, sponsored by the United States and the European Union, is expected to reaffirm political support for the Iraqi government. Russia sharply opposed the invasion of Iraq and has expressed concerns about continuing violence in the country. The ministry said Lavrov and Rice also discussed U.S.-Russian cooperation against terrorism and exchanged opinions about a global conference that ended last week with no consensus on how to strengthen the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty.
