Nurses Strike on Nurses’ Day


Nurses called off celebrations on the Nurses' day, and staged a sit-in protest in front of the Majles to demand higher pay and better conditions. Many nurses' trade organization joined the action, and vowed that nurses' protests will continue. Several nurses’ unions and associations called off any celebration this year on the national nurses’ day, and voiced support for the groups of Tehran hospital nurses who have staged gatherings in front of the Majles, asked the officials of the management and plan organization and the health ministry to raise their wages and improve their working conditions. The nurses’ pay is not fair, former deputy of the Tehran University’s medical school Dr. Iraj Harirchi told the official news agency IRNA on the sidelines of the nurses’ demonstration. Head of the nurses association (Nezam Parastari) Ghazanfar Mirzabeigi warned that “worse things (than today’s demonstration) may happen in the future.” Secretary-general of the house of nurses, another trade group, said he had banned celebration on this year’s nurses’ day, adding that nurses will continue state their protests.
