UPRISING ANNIVERSARY: A Historical Message

The July 1999 police attack on student dorms, and the police crackdown of the uprising that followed, was a violation of internationally recognized human rights norms and several articles of the Islamic Republic constitution, Radio Farda’s law commentator, Virginia-based human rights activist and author Mehrangiz Kar says. “That was the historic message of that event,” she adds. The students were exercising their constitutional right to hold a rally, and were within their rights, since they did not carry weapons and their rally was not against Islam, she adds, yet their living places, their properties and their bodies were violated.
