OPPOSITION: Clerics Warn against Renewed Activity of the Hojjatieh Sect
July 11, 2004 - Two years after a crackdown on a religious group that promotes separation of mosque and state, Friday prayer leaders in many provinces warned against its renewed activity. The Hojatieh group, which is said to have followers within the government and among intensely religious Shiites across the country, are followers of the Najaf based Iranian-born Iraqi cleric Ayatollah Ali Sistani.
In Sharoud, Friday prayer leader Abbas Amini said Hojatieh members are actively recruiting new members in the city’s mosques.
