LABOR: Teachers Rally to Protest Arrests of Labor Organizers

July 18, 2004 - In gathering on Sunday in front of the Majles, a number of members of the trade union of teachers rallied to protest against the arrest last week of the head of the union Mahmoud Beheshti-Langaroudi and his spokesman Ali-Asgar Zati. The teachers said their rally was not political, and was only aimed at voicing their demands. Some Majles MPs joined the rally, and invited teachers’ representatives to talk. The two arrested organizers were charged with disrupting national security. The education ministry’s legal support office said it defends teachers in cases that involve their activities on the job, but added that it has not received any request for help from Beheshti. Meanwhile, speaking to a conference of education district directors, President Khatami said “if we look fairly, certain steps have already been taken to better the lot of teachers.”
