TERROR: Iran Dismisses US Probe on Links with al-Qaeda

July 20, 2004 - Foreign ministry spokesman Hamid-Reza Asefi said any links to Islamic internatioal terrorist network al-Qaeda, which President George Bush said US is investigating, is “ficticious and imaginar.” Bush said on Monday that the US is “digging the facts” about Iran’s possible link with al-Qaeda terrorists, after it was reported that a Senate commission probing September 11 attacks has evidence that 8 of the 19 September 11 hijackers passed through Iran on their way to Afghanistan, but the Iranian border guards did not stamp their passports. Asefi says Iran has porous borders and it would not be strange if a few individuals moved through illegally. CIA acting director John McLaughlin said on Sunday that here is no evidence showing Iran supported the attacks. Media reports say the commission investigating the attacks will reach the same conclusion in its final report on Thursday.
