HEALTH: Cabinet Approves Smoking Ban in Public Places

July 30, 2004 - The Khatami cabinet approved a bill to ban smoking in government offices and public places, and sent it to Majles for approval. More than 50,000 die every year of smoking related diseases, the healthcare ministry warned. Fighting smoking is a cultural effort and cannot be accomplished by issuing circulars and passing laws, Tehran-based psychologist Dr. Aslan Zarrabi tells Radio Farda. It appears that the anti-smoking ban has no teeth, Tehran-based lawyer Mohammad-Hossein Aghasi tells Radio Farda’s broadcaster Farin Asemi. “A law can only be effective when it follows its provisions with rewards and punishments.”
