Police Chief Warns Iranian Women against Following Western Fashions
August 9, 2004 - Chief of the Islamic Republic law enforcement forces Mohammad-Baqer Qalibaf warned Iranian women against following western fashions in clothes and make-up. He said in an interview carried by official the news agency IRNA that police officers had orders to arrest women who do not respect Islamic dress code. His comments were a part of the rising tide of police crackdown on Iranian women who resist the government’s attempts to enforce a version of Islamic codes of attire and make-up.
