REGION: Khatmai Calls for Emergency OIC Meeting on Najaf Crisis
August 20, 2004 - President Khatami asked Islamic countries to convene a special meeting to discuss what he termed as “catastrophe” in Iraq, where armed elements under insurgent Shiite cleric Moqtada Sadr have been fighting US and Iraqi troops from strongholds inside Najaf’s Imam Ali shrine. In a phone call to general secretary of the 57-member Organization of the Islamic Conference Abdullah Ahmad Badawi to hold the summit to decide on immediate action to end the escalating violence in Najaf, the official news agency IRNA reports. Moqtada Sadr surrendered keys to the Imam Ali shrine to representatives of Grand Ayatollah Sistani, after his men came under fire from Iraqi forces in the aftermath of the latest failed attempt at compromise.
