WELFARE: 15 Newcomers Per Hour Join the Street Children Population, Activist Says
August 20, 2004 - The street kids population grows by an average of 15 children per hour, according to Sussan Bahar, secretary of the Tehran-based society to abolish child labor. Ms. Bahar, who is in Germany on a lecture tour, tells Radio Farda’s Cologne correspondent Shaham Mirian that many girls run away from homes after being subjected to sexual abuse, but face rape and exploitation within the 24 hours after leaving home. Two months ago 54 Iranian kids were sold something similar to a slave market in Dubai, she adds.
