ECONOMY: Khatami’s Scorecard


August 25, 2004 - The Khatami government celebrates its economic achievements during the official “government week” for the last time before leaving office. While higher oil prices helped Khatami achieve a relatively high growth rate, and his administration is credited with tax reforms, reducing foreign debt and efforts to improve Iran’s international image, the Khatami government compromised with powerful conservatives who resisted his bid to rid the economy of such fundamental ills of an economy which is still as oil-dependent, state-dominated and introverted as before, Radio Farda’s Paris-based economic commentator says.
