Iranian President Mohammad Khatami will be one of the keynote speakers at a U.N. conference today,5th April, on how to use dialogue to bring people closer together.
The conference in Paris is being organized by the U.N.'s educational, cultural, and scientific organization, known as UNESCO. Iran has been behind UNESCO's effort to promote a dialogue among civilizations, cultures and peoples. The U.N. Year of Dialogue Among Civilizations was launched in 2001.
Today's meeting in Paris will assess what progress has been made since then. In a 1999 address at a UNESCO conference in Paris, Khatami said the "wall of mistrust" between civilizations must be torn down, but to do that, he said, would require a change in attitude by the U.S.
An exiled Iranian opposition group -- the National Council of Resistance, is planning a demonstration against Khatami today in Paris.
