ECONOMY: Police Chief Blasts Rise of Goods Smuggling

August 24, 2004 - Police chief Mohammad-Baqer Qalifab said smugglers bring $5.5 billion goods into the country. A few months ago, deputy commerce minister Mohsen Bahrami put the value of underground imports at $11 billion. Shoe manufactures’ spokesman recently said at least 20 million pairs of foreign-made shoes enter the market illegally each year, and the textile association says 60 percent of the fabrics sold in Iran have been smuggled unlawfully. The private sector blames government organs, semi-governmental charities and religious-economic cartels of involvement in goods smuggling. The lower figure given by the police chief indicates that goods smuggling equals the country’s non-oil exports, Radio Farda’s Paris-based economic commentator Fereydoun Khavand says.
