ژان خاكزاد، پاريس <ENGLISH><TITLE>US-French Tensions intensifies: The Axis of Evil Speech Aftermath</TITLE><AUTHOR>Jean Khakzad, Paris</AUTHOR><TEXT>Reacting to the stinging French criticism of US the policy toward Iran, Iraq and North Korea, President Bush said the US cannot allow despotic rulers suppress and starve their own people and join terrorists to threaten other countries. Efforts to reduce US-French tensions are facing renewed difficulties, according to diplomats in the French Foreign Ministry. In spite of its alliance with the US, France has historically sought to follow an independent foreign policy, particularly in its relations with Arab countries. France strongly condemned the September 11 terrorist attacks, but said war against terrorism cannot succeed only with military force and without recognizing what they believed were the “roots” of terrorism. France also objected to the US Administrations strong threat of military action against Iraq and offered its own proposals for settling the Middle East crisis. In spite of the growing tensions, analysts believe differences between the two allies can only go so far, and common bonds will soon replace divergent words with common actions.</TEXT></ENGLISH>
