Iran’s Quake Survivors Spend Night in Tents, Temporary Shelters

Survivors of Zarand earthquake in Kerman province south of Iran have spent the night in tents and temporary shelters following the 6.4-magnitude earthquake that killed at least 420 people and injured some 900 others. The quake early Tuesday, 22nd February, centred around the town of Zarand, flattened a number of villages, crumbling mud brick structures. Officials said thousands of tents and tons of blankets and food have been distributed to survivors. Kerman Governor Mohammad Ali Karimi said all efforts were made so that residents in the quake-effected areas would not spend the night outdoors. But he acknowledged the rescue effort had not yet been completed in up to five remote villages. Iranian officials say the relief effort is under control and there would be no need for international assistance. The quake occurred just 14 months after the Bam temblor in Kerman province killed more than 30,000 people.
