Iranian Foreign Minister Kamal Kharazi said Iran opposes any unilateral US military action in Iraq. * Amsterdam-based Touraj Atabaki, an expert on Central Asia and Turkey, tells RFE/RL that Turkey and Iran both oppose the establishment of an autonomous Kurdish government in northern Iraq. He adds that Turkey, more in line with the US, did not join Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Syria in opposition to a possible US military intervention against Saddam, and tries to bring Iran around to its position. (Alireza Taheri) Judiciary Tries Newspapers' Lawyer over Remarks on RFE/RL Ne'mat Ahmadi , a prominent attorney and advocate of human rights and press freedom, was tried by a conservative court in Tehran yesterday for remarks he made in an interview aired by RFE/RL on 16 June. He was accused of discrediting the spokesperson of the Guardians Council who had received a law license from the establishment set up by the Judiciary parallel to the Bar Association. Mr. Ahmadi says that the only legal establishment responsible for issuing licences for the lawyers is the Bar Association. The deputy secretary of CG, Mr. Reza Zavare'i , the complainant, accused Ahmadi of spreading lies against the Guradians. Mr. Ahmadi has been given a week time to apologize but he says that he prefers to go to jail than to compromise with the powerful Guardians. * Ne'mat Ahmadi tells RFE/RL that his one-day trial at the press court today coincided with the Majles vote to confirm the repeal of the provision used by the Judiciary to license and hire new lawyers. He says his trial was a part of the Judiciary's move against the lawyers who defended political activists and journalists. (Alireza Taheri) Shiite Speaker of Lebanese Parliament Rejects Iran's New Musa Sadr Position * Speaker of Lebanese parliament Nabih Birri claims Iran's assertion that the Palestinian terrorist Abu Nidhal, found dead last month in Baghdad, was involved in the 1978 disappearance in Libya of Lebanese Shiite leader Imam Musa Sadr is simply a means for Iran to end the question of Musa Sadr's disappearance. President Khatami, who is married to Musa Sadr's sister, sent a commission to Libya after Libya's judiciary chief suggested last week that Palestinian extremists can better explain Musa Sadr's disappearance. (Farideh Rahbar, Cairo) Russia Begins Assembling Heavy Equipment at Bushehr Nuclear Plant * Russian technicians began the assembly of the heavy equipment of the first reactor at the Bushehr nuclear power plant, contractor chief Viktor Kozlov said today. (Farideh Rahbar, Cairo) Judiciary Tries Former Tehran University Head on Subversion Charge * Mohammad Maleki, the first post-revolution president of the Tehran University and a member of the nationalist-religious coalition, appeared in the Tehran revolutionary court today to stand trial on subversion charges. HeHe tells RFE/RL that he refused to defend himself, and in a written statement questioned the court's legality. Judge Haddad told him that he faces capital punishment for subversion and must formally present his deposition in the presence of a lawyer. Maleki says he plans to return with a university colleague who has agreed to act as his lawyer and would sign the court papers without actually defending him. Of the 15 nationalist religious coalition members released on bail two months ago after one year in jail, five were tried in jail, five have been tried since their release, and the last five will be tried within the next three weeks. All trials were held behind closed doors. (Golnaz Esfandiari) University Bars Pro-Reform Islamic Students' Meetings * Shahid Beheshti University barred the separate meetings of the councils of the two factions of the pro-reform union of the universities Islamic student associations, Daftar-e Tahkim Vahdat. Paris-based Said Peyvandi says prominent government reformists support the minority faction, but the Daftar, which represents pro-reform Islamic student associations and acted as a pro-Khatami political party during the elections, does not represent the majority of Iranian university students, who are not members of the Islamic student associations. (Kian Manavi) RFE/RL Roundtable: Failure of Reforms and Iran's Future * Tehran University political science professor Sadeq Zibakalam says the Khatami reforms failed due to the incompetence of the reformists. Tehran-based independent journalist and editor of the monthly Goftegu (Dialogue) Morad Saqafi says he is more optimistic about the eventual success of the reformists outside the government than those within. Switzerland-based political analyst and former information minister Dariush Homayoun says the problem is the Islamic regime itself whose ideology does not apply to the modern world. وزيرامورخارجه تركيه در مذاكره با رئيس جمهوري و وزيرامورخارجه حكومت ايران، به موضوع هاي بحران خاورميانه، عراق و افغانستان پرداخت. وزيرامورخارجه تركيه خواستار حل بحران عراق از طريق مسالمت آميز شد و وزير امورخارجه جمهوري اسلامي با اقدام نظامي احتمالي آمريكا عليه حكومت صدام حسين مخالفت ورزيد. پروفسور تورج اتابكي، استاد تاريخ معاصر در پژوهشكده بين المللي تاريخ اجتماعي در آمستردام، هلند، و كارشناس امور سياسي منطقه، در مصاحبه با راديوآزادي مي گويد: ديدار وزيرامورخارجه تركيه از ايران به سبب نزديكي حمله احتمالي آمريكا به حكومت صدام حسين انجام گرفت. وي مي افزايد: در واكنش نسبت به بحران عراق، تركيه به محور عربستان سعودي، سوريه و اردن نپيوست و خود را بيشتر با موضع آمريكا تطبيق داد و تلاش مي كند حكومت ايران را نيز به محور خود بكشاند. وي مي افزايد حكومت هاي ايران و تركيه در مخالفت با تشكيل حكومت خودمختار كردها در شمال عراق، با يكديگر تشريك مساعي دارند.
