Police say they overpowered an Iranian-born man who was holding at knife-point four school girls at a cellar in the north western German town of Ennepetal.
The man forced the children aged 10 and 11 from a school bus around noon and held them for several hours.
There was no immediate word about the condition of the children or the motive of the alleged hostage taker.
