Tehran's municipal district 10's mayor said special dress and behavior enforcers will be placed in the public parks. The police and the voluntary Basij unit of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corp stepped up their enforcement activities too. Every year, during the official 10-day mourning ceremonies, new rules begin to be enforced, and this year is not an exception, Mercedes, a young Tehrani woman, tells Radio Farda. The presence of the IRGC and Basij officers in the public parks is nothing new either, she adds. The people follow the rules more seriously during the mourning week. (Farin Asemi) UN Human Rights Envoy Ends Mission in Iran • The missions of UN human rights commission's specialized reporters ended, the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights of Migrants Gabriela Rodriguez Pizarro said on Saturday evening in a press conference before leaving Iran. She said on her return to Geneva she will issue a report about the condition of the refugees living in Iran and her meetings with officials, women's organizations and Afghan refugee camps. (Mahmonir Rahimi) US Denies IRIB Report on Bin Laden's Arrest • The US Defense Department denied reports aired on Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB)'s Pashto program, which claimed that the US has already taken in custody terror leader Osama Bin Laden, but plans to withhold the announcement until just before the US Presidential Elections. (Fatemeh Aman) DM Sees US Promotion of Democracy Threat to Islam • The US program to promote US style democracy in the Middle East was a threat against Islam, Defense minister Ali Shamkhani said after a meeting in Beirut with Lebanese DM Mahmoud Hammoud. “All the threats which have been brought up and are being made in different forms against Islam, the Islamic countries and the Middle East region, are conducted under the cover of America's greater Middle East initiative," he added. (Amir Armin) Judiciary Steps Up Prosecution of Reformist Press • After closing the reformist daily Yaas Now, Tehran judiciary's press court announced that hearing will be held on March 10 on all the complaints the judiciary have received against it. Touse'e, another pro-reform daily, will go on trial on March 3. Meanwhile, Shargh, a new pro-reform daily, which was closed on February 18 along with Yaas-e Now, was allowed to resume publication. The press court acquitted head of Islamic Republic News Agency IRNA Abdollah Naseri, after he answered to the complaints filed by the armed forces joint chief, IRGC and Tehran revolutionary courts. The trial of jailed editor of daily Asia Iraj Jamshidi continued behind closed doors before bench 26 of the Tehran revolutionary courts. In another hearing today, the Tehran judiciary arraigned managing editor of the pro-reform daily Mardomsalali Mostafa Kavakebian with nine violations. Kavakebian said all charges against him had to do with items reprinted from other newspapers or official news agencies about the Guardians Council's vetting role in the elections. Also, the press court arraigned managing editor of the weekly Chelcheraq Fereydoun Amouzadeh-Khalili. The judiciary closed Tehran University's students' monthly Vaqayeh-e Etefaqieh for carrying a harshly worded letter to the Supreme Leader. Meanwhile, the elections' top vote getter in Tehran and head of the Majles conservative faction Gholamali Haddad Adel said newspapers which violate the law will be closed. (Farin Asemi) Debate on Wage Haggling By Workers' Groups • Since the largest employer is the government, there is no link between wages and productivity, Tehran University economy professor Jamshid Pazhouyan tells Radio Farda. The lack of a link between wages and productivity has contributed to chronic low output, even in the private sector. But at a time when most of the labor force lives in poverty, haggling is the only way the for workers to receive better pay and benefits, head of the association of the Islamic labor councils Hassan Sadeqi says. Any pay increases received by workers had already been offset by the high inflation, and did nothing to increase their buying power, he adds. (Fereydoun Zarnegar) Majles Approves 1,00 Trillion-Rial Budget • The Majles approves the Khatami government's budget bill for the upcoming fiscal year. The bill increases government spending to 100 trillion rials, and authorizes higher foreign debt, freer foreign trade rules, tougher fight against goods smuggling, energy price hikes, and an increase in the prices of government-produced goods and services. I tell my life as I lived it, former Empress Farah Pahlavi said of her last husband and her memoir “An Enduring Love: My Life with the Shah” in an interview with the New York Times. “The Islamic Republic put me on their death list. The people of Iran were promised a paradise by the fundamentalists, who opened the door to hell,” she added. Democracy and Human Rights Roundtable: Majles Elections • The Majles elections were flawed, and 130 MPs, President Khatami, the EU and the US all said that the elections were flawed, Tehran university law professor and former Majles MP Qasem Shoaleh-Saadi says. National Fronts Hold Conference in LA • Members of the National Front (Jebheh-ye Melli, founded by populist 1950's prime minister Mohammad Mossadeq, held a conference on Saturday in Los Angeles, named Abbas Amir-Entezam, in honor of the Islamic regime's longest-held political prisoner. In the two-day conference, 40 will give speeches, National Front member Kambiz Qaem-Maqam tells Radio Farda. In a special session on Monday, members will make decisions about future actions, he adds.
