Summary of Iran Stories in Today's BroadcastsBehnam NateghiThursday, April 29, 2004 Iran Tops US List of State Sponsors of Terrorism • The US named Iran as the world's biggest state sponsor of terrorism in 2003. In its annual report, Patterns of Global Terrorism, the US State Department said the Islamic government, through the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corp and a variety of intelligence and security organs, has financed, trained and armed many of the groups involved in terrorist acts. The list of state sponsors of terrorism includes Iran, Syria, Libya, Iraq and North Korea. Iraq will be omitted once that country's new government renounces terrorism, the report said. A total of 307 people were killed last year, compared with 725 in 2002 and 1,593 were wounded, compared with 2,013 last year, in 190 acts of international terrorism, eight fewer than in 2002. Women Rights Activists Protest State TV's Image of Women • The TV managers believe reason to be a masculine characteristic, and love and affection feminine; in TV shows men are always portrayed as active in the public sphere, in politics, economy, culture and literature, and women at home, women's rights activist Marzieh Mortazi-Langaroudi said in a speech yesterday at the rally to protest against the state's TV monopoly's portrayal of the Iranian women. Journalist Fariba Davoodi-Mohajer said it is common in TV shows to use degrading words and comments about women as jokes, which indicates that those in power see women as servants or serfs in the service of the other gender. Journalist Parsa Eshqi said the TV shows not only demean women, but portray men as lewd and despicable beings. Activist Mitra Shojai said TV's satirical programs portray women as jabbering, jealous, conniving, impatient and weak, whereas these are characteristics common to both genders. Sociologist Nayyereh Tavakoli said to avoid hugging her son, a TV mother has to resort to fainting or some other silly excuse, and a TV woman goes to bed wearing her coat and headscarves. “Nothing shown on the TV has any relation to the life outside TV, she said. (Leyli Arman) Czech President and Foreign Minister Avoid Visiting Kharrazi • The Czech President and that country's foreign minister avoided meeting foreign minister Kamal Kharrazi, who said he was visiting Prague to inform Czech officials about Iran's nuclear program. Czech Prime Minister Vladimir Spilda, who met with Kharrazi on Wednesday, said he hoped the Iran-Czech ties would improve after the Czech Republic joins the EU. Finance Ministry Puts Out Overblown Foreign Investment Figures • In the fiscal year that ended on March 20, 2003, Iran received more than $2 billion in foreign investment, finance ministry's deputy for foreign investments said. In the current fiscal year, Iran will absorb $8 billion to $10 billion in foreign investment, finance ministry's director of foreign investments said. The officials figures on foreign investment do not match those compiled by experts from past news repots and other sources, Radio Farda's Paris-based economic commentator Fereydoun Khavand says. According to the Iranian Stats quarterly put out by France's finance ministry, foreign investment in Iran in the year 2002 was $250 million. The figure increased to $360 million in 2003. Khatami Inaugurates Caspian-Gulf Oil Swap Program • President Khatami inaugurated the first phase of an oil swap program in which Iran would deliver 170,000 barrels of oil per day from its own resources in the Persian Gulf in exchange for oil received from littoral states in Iran's Caspian Sea port of Neka. In his speech at the ceremony yesterday, President Khatami blasted the US for its efforts to block the transfer of Caspian Sea oil to the Persian Gulf through Iran. Caspian Littoral States Step Up Arms Buildup • Russia, Iran and other Caspian littoral states have embarked on a massive arms buildup in the Caspian Sea, even as they pay lip service to demilitarization of the Sea. Concerned about Chechnya and the expansion of NATO to the countries on its borders, Russia, by increasing its military presence in the Caspian Sea, is sending a message to the US and the Western countries that it still considers the region as its own sphere of influence, Washington-based Caspian affairs expert Bahman Aghai-Diba tells Radio Farda. (Alireza Taheri) Iran Court Orders US to Pay $600 Million in Damages to Chemical Attack Victims • A court in Tehran ruled that the US should pay $600 million in compensation to the survivors for supplying ousted Iraqi president Saddam Hussein with the chemical weapons used in attacks in the 1980-88 Iran-Iraq war, according to the official news agency IRNA. • The judgments of the US courts against the Islamic Republic and in favor of the families of Middle East terror victims can conceivably be paid out of Iran's assets frozen in the US, but there are no US assets in Iran from which to pay the damages awarded by the Tehran court, international law expert Said Mahmoudi tells Radio Farda. (Jamshid Zand) Victims of Surgery Anesthetics Sue Hospital for Negligence • The death of another patient who had gone into a coma after surgery in Tehran's Mehr hospital, raised the number of victims of the hospital's operating rooms to three, as six patients continue to linger in a coma. The hospital authorities initially blamed the fatalities and post-surgery complications either on bad anesthetics bought on the black market, or on contaminated operating rooms, a victim's brother-in-law Ali Azad tells Radio Farda. However, according to the society of Iranian pharmacists, the anesthetics used in the hospital were legally purchased from a reputable German pharmaceutical company. On the other hand, the physicians of the Iranmehr hospital protested against the health ministry's decision to close the hospital before investigating the causes of deaths. The hospital, one of Tehran's top facilities, naturally tries to exonerate itself, Mahmoud Rezazadeh whose father died following a surgery on his foot, tells Radio Farda. The victims' families hope that the judiciary would not file their case in the same drawer where it filed the investigations on the bloody train explosion in Nishabur and the distribution of contaminated meat, Tehran newspapers said. (Leyli Arman) MP Blasts Gender Quotas in University Admissions • The health ministry plans to set quotas to block the admission of more women than men in the country's medical schools, Tehran MP Elaheh Koulaee tells Radio Farda. “We consider this plan a blatant cruelty against women and an obvious discrimination against girls, who fair better than boys in the highly competitive university entrance exams. (Nazi Azima) Consumers Complain of Higher Prices after Gasoline Price Hike • In contacts with Radio Farda, many Iranians complained about the recent 20 percent hike in prices of nearly all consumer goods and services, from super market items to cab fares. President Khatami reacted angrily to the mounting criticism in the conservative-controlled newspapers and the state radio-TV monopoly against his government. The conservative media overwhelmingly blamed the rising prices on the Khatami administration's decision last month to raise the domestic prices of fuel by 30 percent. President Khatami's policies of overspending and increasing the money supply are responsible for the inflation, Tehran-based economist and author Musa Ghaninezhad tells Radio Farda. The people and even some elites, who are uninformed about economic matters, blame merchants, distributors and retailers for higher prices, whereas the inflation is an outcome of the increase in money supply beyond the available goods and services, he adds. By borrowing from domestic banks to make up for the budget deficits, the government has caused inflation rate to rise, he says. The annual increases in domestic fuel prices are naturally followed by price hikes of other items, because no alternative to more expensive fuel has been offered, Tehran University economy professor Kazem Khoshchehreh tells Radio Farda Raising gasoline prices with the intention of controlling the consumption can only be effective when alternate choices have been planned and made available to the public. (Fereydoun Zarnegar) • President Khatami expressed anger at the runaway inflation and charged the new finance minister with the task of fighting the inflation. He also criticized the conservative media's attacks on his government's decision to raise the domestic price of gasoline, which the critics blamed for the rising prices. .
